1:50 scale Scania Streamline Topline (6x2) tractor unit and 3 axle, curtain trailer, customised in the classy livery of Scottish operator John Mackirdy Haulage.

This new model follows on from the earlier, sell out, release of the DAF XF105 and fridge trailer which was commissioned to celebrate the winning of Transport News’ “Scotland's Most Innovative Haulier of the Year 2011” award.

The models have again been produced exclusively for Search Impex by WSI Collectibles as a certificated, Limited Edition (175 pieces).

The Scania tractor unit is the latest addition to the Mackirdy fleet which also embraces Volvo, MAN & some long serving and much loved ERF trucks, together with a variety of trailers, including fridges, curtains, flats, tankers and tippers.

Based on the Isle of Bute, the origins of John Mackirdy Haulage can be traced back a staggering 145 years of continuous family ownership.  Born in 1835, founder, John Mackirdy’s first real foray into transport involved the use of horses and carts to shift construction materials following the family’s decision to move out of milling and into building.  Word spread about the new “carting firm” and additional work soon came in the form of requests to collect goods and supplies from the ferry berthing point in Rothesay for distribution and delivery around the island.

Following John Mackirdy’s death in 1909, the business passed to the second generation and his second son, MacTaggart, took over the reins.  By 1930, he had embarked on a programme to modernise the business and introduced motorised vehicles – a Commer Centaur, complete with a hand operated tipping body being the first!  Additional motors joined the fleet and by 1951, MacTaggart had persuaded his son, John, to join him in preparation for him taking over the running of the family business.  John soon found himself in sole charge of the fleet which, by then, totalled five vehicles and it was under his stewardship, that the now familiar corporate livery (comprising a two tone blue colour scheme, offset with gold lettering) was introduced.  He also oversaw the growth of the business into an effective general haulage concern, transporting significant volumes of milk, dairy and agricultural produce off the island and bringing return loads of everyday supplies for the island and its inhabitants.

By 1987, the business entered the fourth generation as John handed over the management of “a good healthy horse” to his son (also named John) and his wife, Elaine.  Having been immersed in transport from the outset, the handover and transition period was like a natural evolution and nowadays, John and Elaine, like three generations before them, remain fully committed to the management and success of their haulage business.

With a pedigree comprising 145 years of traceable history in transport to and from the Isle of Bute, four generations of the Mackirdys and with the business still being family owned and run, a Mackirdy Haulage model ought surely to feature in many an enthusiast’s collection!
