Bretts is a warehousing and distribution specialist located just east of Peterborough in north Cambridgeshire. Still a family owned and run business, the Bretts family is now in its fifth generation of trading. It was in the 1880’s that James Wilsworth Brett moved from Norwich to Thorney Toll where he set up a carpentry and wheelwright business and raised a family which saw him have three sons. His eldest son, Charles, on moving out of the family home, went on to set up various enterprises including agricultural contracting, tending a small holding and repairing and dealing in motor vehicles. One of his many activities was to collect stone with a horse and cart from the old Guyhirn rail station – the stone being used to construct what is now better known as the A47. This employment paid a shilling per load!

Charles went on to have 4 children Stanley, Florence, Ray and Roy and between them, from 1933 onwards, they were responsible for growing and developing the ‘transport’ business – which, in 1939, became a registered company. The business continued to grow – with much of the work coming from the local East Anglian agricultural sector and from the then thriving canning industry.

In 1993, the Company passed from Father (Ray) to Son (Simon) – who became the present day MD. Under Simon’s stewardship, whilst the business has continued to stay true to its founding area of expertise – food distribution, it has continued to expand, providing storage and distribution services to food merchants, manufacturers and importers alike. Under Simon’s tenure, revenue has increased fifteen fold and in order to keep pace with market requirements, the business has continued to invest and expand into warehousing facilities with storage space capacity increasing from an initial 3,000 pallets to the 30,000 pallets that the Company has today.

Ideally situated for the storage and onward transportation of imported goods arriving via the East Coast and Outer London ports, as well as manufactured goods from across East Anglia and the East Midlands, Bretts Transport operates a modern fleet of vehicles – predominantly Scania and curtain trailers (such as those on which the models will be based), as well as a number of skeletal trailers.

Bretts is now a nationally recognised name specialising in ambient deliveries to the retail, food service and food manufacturing sectors, typically delivering in excess of 12,000 pallets of food and food grade packaging per week. Three of Simon's children have also recently started their careers in the Company – with the intention that Bretts remains a family business for many years to come!
