Customised promotional model vehicle specialists, Search Impex, are pleased to announce the release of a 1:50 scale MAN TGX XLX (6×2) tractor unit with 3 axle, bulk tipper trailer, customised in the attractive livery of Scottish operator, W.W. Glendinning.
As 2014 winners of the prestigious Transport News Scotland’s Top Tipper Operator award and having recently celebrated 35 years in business, W. W. Glendinning decided to mark the occasion by commissioning a run of model trucks. The models have been produced exclusively for Search Impex by WSI Collectibles and are a certificated Limited Edition (155 pieces).
Established by Walter Glendinning in the late 1970’s, today’s operation bears little resemblance to the start up business which had its origins in the timber trade and produced wooden packing crates for local industry, as well as offering wood supplies and ready built products. On leaving school, Walter was joined in the business by his son, also named Walter – hence the official trading name of W.W. Glendinning. Walter Junior, known locally as “Watty”, was keen to expand the delivery side of the business and so bought a 7.5 tonne Leyland Terrier soon after passing his driving test. This was used to undertake deliveries of their own products but Wattys soon found other companies asking him to make their local delivery drops, too. Increasing work led to investment in a second truck as well as requests for deliveries further afield in Scotland.
In 1981, W. W. Glendinning relocated to the Fife town of Windygates after purchasing a small transport business whose owners who were retiring. The business came with two trucks (and drivers!) and had a focus on agricultural work. The work proved reliable and steady and so when Walter Senior retired in 1983, the decision was made to close the timber business and then joined by his younger brother, Andrew, Watty set about developing the agricultural transport business.
Nowadays, the Company operates nine trucks (all 6×2 units) and around 21 trailers – most of which, unsurprisingly, are bulk tippers. Always immaculately turned out, the fleet is finished in Exning Blue & Post Office red and the cab sides are embellished with traditionally hand painted Scottish pipers. Today’s workload majors on the transportation of vegetables, grains and other agricultural produce, but the flexibility afforded by tipper trailers means they are also sometimes involved in moving sand and gravel for the many local quarries.
Models, available from Search Impex, are priced at £139 each (including UK delivery & VAT). For details of availability of this and other models, collectors can visit the Search Impex website at www.search-impex.co.uk or call them on 01332 873 555.
