A flagship achievement on the innovation came about after a mission was launched by McCulla, some nine years ago, to remove fossil fuels, as a source of energy, from their Irish operations. This saw a major investment being made in a state of the art anaerobic digestion plant. Sited in Lisburn, this digester has subsequently prevented thousands of tonnes of food waste from being sent to landfill. Instead, the food waste is converted into electricity and used to power McCulla’s cold stores – thereby making McCulla one of the only 100% green powered cold storage companies in the UK & Ireland.
And when it comes to green credentials, McCulla’s transport operation has also stepped right up to the mark. More significant investment and further innovation in 2020 gave McCulla the ability to introduce a fleet of trucks which can run on 100% renewable bio methane gas – the Iveco S-Way, on which the model is based, being one such example. These gas powered trucks have resulted in a staggering 93% reduction in their carbon footprint – all from food waste collected from businesses across Ireland.
With vehicles present in every county of Ireland on a daily basis, McCulla (Ireland) also conducts extensive business on the UK mainland and throughout Europe, providing export options for the food manufacturing and pharmaceutical sectors. With over 125 trucks and 210 trailers in their fleet, including artics, refrigerated vans and rigid lorries, McCulla trucks are sure to be a familiar sight to many collectors.
